I Love My Antique Floor Lamp

A few years ago I picked up an antique floor lamp at one of those garage sales. It only cost me about $20 so I thought it was a bit of a bargain. It’s actually made out of brass with the lamp stand built around the pole. To be honest, I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it and just had to bring it home. It didn’t really matter how much it was.

When I got it back to my house, I spent some time cleaning it up really well and polished the brass. I also went out and bought a new shade for it. I couldn’t find any antique floor lamp shades and although I did want to keep the original lamp shade it was looking decidedly tatty and almost falling apart. I made sure to get new lamp shade that matched the stand.

I admit I was a little bit nervous about whether it was going to work or not. I’d asked the man who was selling it whether it worked and he had assured me that it did. Unfortunately, because he was moving out the next day, all the electricity had been turned off at his home so I couldn’t test it.

So when I got home I carefully I gently screwed in the light bulb, plugged it in and turned the switch. Sure enough, it turned right on. It was so beautiful and well-looked after that I asked my parents to come and look at it. They are also into antiques so they had an interest in my antique brass floor lamp.

They both absolutely loved it and were particularly impressed with the fact that I had only paid $20 for the lamp. They asked me if the guy had anything else that might be worth buying, which I never thought to ask him myself. In the end we drove by his house to take another look around but unfortunately there were no more antique floor lamps.

I wanted to have it appraised to find out what is worth so I took the lamp to a local antiques dealer who knew an appraiser. He said it would be difficult to determine its value because the lamp details weren’t very clear on the base, but told me he had a friend who could probably tell the value just by looking at the lamp.

Unfortunately I never did get round to meeting the appraiser and I still wonder how much my antique floor lamp is actually worth. But when I think about it, I don’t think I would sell it to anyone anyway, no matter what it ends up being worth. To be honest I have no idea what antique brass floor lamps might be worth, but I do know that it is mine and I have fallen in love with the lamp.

I’m glad to say that I have never had any problems with my antique floor lamp and it is still in pristine condition. I have already been in contact with a local man who works on antique lamps just in case anything ever happens to it. He would be able to find any antique floor lamp parts if necessary. My main desire is that one day I can pass the lamp on to my children and that they have as much pleasure from it as I have.
